World Water Day – 22nd March 2026

As the world faces increasing pressures — from climate change and water-related disasters to funding gaps, social inequalities and governance challenges — it is more important than ever that we work together to manage water as a shared global resource and build resilience for the future.

World Water Day, observed annually on 22 March since 1993, is a United Nations initiative dedicated to highlighting the importance of freshwater. It raises awareness of the 2.1 billion people who still live without access to safe water and inspires action to tackle the global water crisis.

A central objective of World Water Day is to support Sustainable Development Goal 6 — ensuring access to water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Each year, UN-Water sets a global theme to focus collective action. Recent themes have included:

  • 2024: Leveraging Water for Peace
  • 2025: Glacier Preservation
  • 2026: Water and Gender

This year’s theme recognises that access to safe water and sanitation is not only a fundamental human right, but also a critical driver of gender equality, health and opportunity.

Progress — but more to do

  • Between 2000 and 2024, 2.2 billion people gained access to safely managed drinking water.
  • Since 2015 alone, 961 million people have benefited from improved access.

While progress continues, the journey is far from complete.
