International Women’s Day – Laura Cook

Meet Laura Cook one of our Project Manager’s at ACWA. We asked Laura a few questions so we could run a short profile highlighting her role, achievements and advice for others entering the industry.

What is your role at ACWA?

I’m a Project Manager at ACWA, working in the water industry. I lead multi-disciplinary teams to deliver projects from feasibility through to design and implementation, making sure they’re managed properly in terms of scope, cost, programme and risk.

A big part of my role is balancing technical, commercial and stakeholder priorities, and making sure we deliver clear, practical outcomes that genuinely add value.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love the variety. No two projects are the same, and the water industry is full of interesting technical and operational challenges.

I really enjoy bringing structure to complexity, helping teams cut through noise, focus on what matters and move forward with clarity. It’s also incredibly rewarding to work in a sector that has such a direct impact on communities and the environment.

What’s an achievement you’re proud of?

Becoming a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager with the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) is something I’m very proud of.

Chartership wasn’t just a qualification, it was a reflection of years of technical development, leadership experience and commitment to doing things properly. The process really made me reflect on my journey and the responsibility we carry as professionals in this sector.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

For me, International Women’s Day is about visibility and momentum. It’s about recognising how far we’ve come in industries like engineering and infrastructure and continuing to create space for more women to lead and shape decisions.

It’s also a reminder that representation matters. When women see others progressing and succeeding, it makes those paths feel more accessible.

Who has inspired you in your career?

I’ve been inspired by leaders who combine competence with integrity, people who stay calm under pressure, make fair decisions, and genuinely support the development of others.

I’m particularly inspired by women who have built strong careers in technical industries while staying authentic and confident in who they are.

What advice would you give to women entering the industry?

Back yourself. You don’t need to know everything on day one, nobody does! Ask questions, stay curious, and don’t underestimate the value of your perspective.

Find mentors, build connections and your network, and take ownership of opportunities when they come your way.

What is your superpower in the workplace?

Bringing clarity to complex situations. I naturally take a structured, systematic approach to problem-solving, which helps when managing risk, contracts and competing priorities.

I’m also good at spotting inefficiencies and driving improvements.

Which women inspire you the most?

I’m inspired by women who lead with resilience and quiet confidence, those who advocate for sustainability, mentor others, and challenge the status quo in practical ways.

And honestly, I’m inspired daily by women in our industry who show up, do excellent work and support each other along the way.
