Right Honourable Stephen Byers

Chairman

Stephen is a law graduate and was a senior lecturer in contract and commercial law at Northumbria University. He was elected as a Member of Parliament in 1992 and served in the Cabinet when Tony Blair was Prime Minister.

He stood down from the House of Commons in 2010 to pursue business and charitable interests. In addition to being ACWA’s Chairman he is senior adviser to the Board of CCC (ACWA’s ultimate parent company) and gives strategic advice to several other companies.

Stephen has established the SJB charitable foundation which supports individuals and community groups in the north east of England. He continues to serve as a member of Her Majesty the Queen’s Privy Council.

Simon Langley

Managing Director

Simon is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer with over 30 years of experience in design, construction, commissioning and programme management within the water industry. His expertise lies in his detailed knowledge and understanding of sustainable solutions, operational delivery and strategies to deliver meaningful change and build successfully teams. He has led bidding, mobilisation and management of multimillion pound projects and programmes harnessing the strengths of multidisciplinary teams.

He has a proven track record in managing both commercial and contractual aspects of project and programme delivery demonstrating his ability to make key strategic decisions to support future business growth.

He joined ACWA in April 2020 as Managing Director and he is responsible for the water and effluent treatment processes and products ACWA deliver to the UK municipal, industrial and food / beverage sectors as a leading innovative solutions provider.

John Peacock

Financial Controller

John has over 10 years’ experience in commercial finance and senior management roles with detailed knowledge and understanding in what it takes to grow an SME. He enjoys a hands-on approach to finance, believing an accountant should have an understanding of all aspects of the business they work in. He has excellent management and communication skills and is passionate about the importance of building long lasting, trust based relationships with ACWA’s valued supply chain.

John joined ACWA in July 2019 as Financial Controller and has direct responsibility for all aspects of Finance, Human Resources and Company Secretarial functions. He sees ACWA as a business with huge growth potential in the immediate future.

Gary Harris

Executive Proposals Director

Gary is a Mechanical Engineer with over 35 years’ proposals experience primarily in the water sector. He believes in integrity and transparency ensuring that ACWA keeps its promises right through into delivery. He has been instrumental in developing solid relationships not only with ACWA’s clients but right through the supply chain. He continually builds on ACWA’s track record by utilising in-house process expertise and technologies and those developed in collaboration with the supply chain to ensure cost effective innovative solutions.

He feels a strong responsibility for keeping everyone safe and free from harm which was further developed in his operational management roles. Gary also has a depth of knowledge relating to water scarcity that only comes with time spent working overseas providing solutions focussing on water re-use.

Gary joined ACWA in 2006 and he is a member of the Leadership Team with full responsibility for the management of the Proposals and Process teams of the company.

David Middleton

Operations Director

As an Integrated Engineer David has the skills base to understand and embrace the complexity and sophistication of multidisciplinary modern engineering. He couples this with his commercial business acumen creating sustainable cost-effective solutions for both clients and the supply chain. With over 25 years’ experience in design, construction and commissioning of products and processes within the UK utility sector this has enabled him to successfully deliver multimillion-pound turnkey projects and manage multidiscipline teams.

He has provided a research and development focus to businesses leading to step changes to the marketability of products and services. This has been achieved by developing strong partnerships with academia and supply chain companies. He has also patented products, developed template designs and assisted in writing WIMES specifications. These achievements are testament to David’s ability to set and monitor realistic goals and well managed objectives.

David prides himself on putting health and safety first and is passionate about promoting solution sustainability and reducing environmental impact. He enjoys developing happy, successful and well-motivated technical and commercial delivery teams.

He joined ACWA in May 2020 as Operations Director and he is responsible for health and safety, quality, engineering and project delivery aspects of the business.

Roger Andrew

Commercial Manager

Roger has over 40 years’ commercial experience underpinned with the business acumen that comes with working in senior management roles. He has extensive commercial and contractual knowledge, and he is very adept at formulating strategies, plans and forecasts to effectively manage and protect ACWA’s commercial position. He believes that through the high value he places on integrity and honesty he is able to negotiate effectively at all levels from clients’ right through the supply chain.

Using his strong interpersonal skills he can eloquently convey complex ideas and provide solutions. He is well known within the water and wastewater sector and he has built up many relationships across multi-disciplined teams enabling them to work together in the most efficient manner.

Roger has been with ACWA for over 15 years leading the company’s commercial interests.
